How to Calculate Bird Netting

Little is worse for a gardener than finding that their fruits and vegetables have come under the attack of birds. Just like us, birds love to nibble fruits and veggies. To preserve your garden you can buy bird netting and cover your vegetables and fruit trees to keep the birds out of them. Before running out and buying bird netting, determine how much netting you will need.

  1. How to Calculate Bird Netting

    • 1

Observe the size of the birds attacking your plants. Choose a mesh size small enough to keep out the smallest birds.

    • 2

Determine the size of nets needed by calculating how many square feet the area you are trying to cover is. At noon, when the Sun is shining directly on top of your fruit trees, take a measuring tape and measure the length and width of your trees shadow to determine how many square feet of netting you will need. One acre is approximately 209 ft. by 209 ft..

    • 3

If you are covering very busy trees, try to also estimate how many feet tall the bushy, fruit growing part of your tree is. Add this calculation to your initial measurements.

    • 4

Throw a bed sheet over smaller plants to calculate how much netting you will need. Measure

the bed sheet to determine your size.
