Where Is the Cotyledon in a Coconut?

The cotyledon of a coconut is also known as the 'embryo' or 'germ'. It is where the initial growth and development of the embryo occurs. The embryo is composed of two cotyledons, that develop into roots and leaves. The coleoptile, which is the small tube-like structure at the end of the embryo, gives rise to the first leaves of the seedling. Inside the mature coconut, the cotyledon is located at the base of the fruit, opposite to the three 'eyes'.
