Organic Fertilizer for Blueberries

Blueberries are medium-sized bushes that grow for years once established. They enjoy hot sunny summers and cold winters, and do best in colder northern, eastern and southern states like Maine, Ohio and North Carolina. Blueberries have very specific soil requirements and qualify as heavy feeders.
  1. Soil

    • Blueberries require deep, loose and highly acidic soil and grow only at certain pH levels. The Ohio State University Extension suggests raised beds for blueberries to ensure proper drainage. Ohio State also suggests several amendments for growing.

    Compost

    • According to North Carolina State University, gardeners should mix organic compounds like sawdust, organic compost, well-rotted manure and pine moss into the soil when planting a blueberry bush. This foundation gives the blueberry bush the vitamins and minerals it needs to start growing.

    Organic Fertilizer

    • According to the Washington State University Extension, organic fertilizers are slow-release rather than fast-acting and are only effective with plants that live long enough to reap the benefits. Natural, organic fertilizers like manure, organic matter and fish emulsion increase the nutrition of the soil, rather than catering directly to a plant's roots. Blueberries, which can live for up to 30 years with the right care, thrive with these long-lasting fertilizers.
