How to Build Strawberry Bed Planter Plans

Strawberries are among the most popular small fruits to grow in the home garden, according to Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service. Homegrown strawberries taste nothing like those found in the grocery store. Their sweet, rich strawberry flavor is well-suited to fresh eating, jams, salads and pies. They are fairly simple to grow, as well. They need fertile, well-drained soil and a very sunny location. One caveat to growing strawberries would be that they can easily become too much of a good thing. They spread through runners and will happily take over the garden. Raised beds keep them in their place.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark the boards to the desired length. Typically, raised beds are 4-by-8 8 feet. But cut them to the size that best fits your garden space.

    • 2

Cut the boards with an electric table saw or hack saw.

    • 3

Stand a long board and a short board on their sides, with ends joined. Screw a deck screw into the top and bottom of the boards, securing the boards together.

    • 4

Screw the remaining boards together securely so they form a box.

    • 5

Move the raised bed to the desired location, preferably a flat, sunny location in the garden close to a water source.

    • 6

Fill the box with soil. Although you will remove some of the older plants annually, you won't have another chance to thoroughly improve the soil. Use a good quality garden mix from a nursery or landscaping firm, amended with plenty of organic material, such as compost and manure.
