Raspberry Plants in Containers

Raspberry plants grow well in containers, making them a viable choice when garden space is limited or a permanent berry patch is not desired. The containers can be moved to the best locations and into protected areas in extremely harsh weather.
  1. Considerations

    • Raspberry plants grown in containers need a good-draining soil mixture with a high organic material content. Use three parts potting soil mixed with one part compost or well-rotted manure.

    Significance

    • Raspberry bushes need at least a 3-gallon container to grow in, which allows enough room for root growth. This size is the easiest to move around but containers also come in 5- and 7-gallon sizes.

    Maintenance

    • Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season. Spread 2 inches of compost in the top of the container to reduce the rate of water evaporation from the soil and provide a source of slow-release nutrients. Trim raspberry canes to a desirable height so the container plants stay manageable.

    Placement

    • Set the raspberry containers in rows outside in an area of full sun. Do not overcrowd the plants since this will prevent the fruit on the lower limbs from developing. Space the rows 8 to 10 feet apart.
