Beans With Purple & Black Seed Flowers

Beans are large plant seeds that grow on flowering herbaceous plants. These annual and perennial bean plants, which are grown and cultivated throughout the world, belong to the Fabaceae family. Bean plants come in two varieties: bush and vine. Beans are one of the Three Sisters plants American Indians grew as a major food source. Many species of bean plants develop purple and black flowers.
  1. Black Beans

    • Eclipse is a variety of black bean with shiny green leaves and purple flowers. The North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station developed this bean variety. This highly productive, early maturing black bean has an erect growing formation. The Eclipse grows from dull black seeds. UI 911 is a black bean species created at the University of Idaho specifically for Pacific Northwest growers. The seeds are small with a plain black seed coat. This upright medium vine produces purple flowers and dismal green foliage.

    Pole Beans

    • Jennings is a species of pole bean with violet flowers produced by the Jennings family in Campbell County, Tenn. These ready-to-eat pole beans develop from a bright burgundy seed. Through the drying process, Jennings pole beans can be stored for winter use. Purple Trionfo Violetta is a type of French style pole bean. This nutty-flavored bean grows in lengthy purple pods that mature in 60 days. Purple Trionfo Violetta flourishes with showy, purple lavender blooms and purple veined leaves.

    Snap Beans

    • Hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureaus) is a bean plant native to India. This ornamental vine bears brilliant fuchsia to purple bean pods that contain snap beans. Hyacinth bean develops showy, large purple blossoms that attract bees and hummingbirds. Flavor Sweet is a type of snap bean grown on bushes that flower with purple or white blossoms. This dark green bean plant requires no support because of the plant's formation and lack of height. The snap beans of Flavor Sweet have a rich, delicious flavor and straight, thin appearance.

    Broad Beans

    • Bell bean is a small seeded cultivar of fava bean. This broad bean grows from a herbaceous leafy, annual plant. This northern Africa and southwest Asian bean species develops from a large taproot. The large white flowers of the bell bean have black and dark purple markings. Fava beans are a winter or spring annual that grows to heights of 2-to-6-feet tall. This bean plant has a huge, deep taproot that anchors the upright plant. The white flowers have purple and black blotches covering the petals.
