Green Annual Flowers

Annual plants such as coleus, grown for their striking foliage, have been developed in recent years in all shades of green. Green is not an uncommon color in flowering bulbs and perennials. Exotic or tropical plants can be found sporting lavish green flowers, but green is still a rarity as an annual in the flower garden. Bells of Ireland, lime zinnias, jade hybrid sunflower and lime green nicotiana are four specimens available to start from seed with an early order from your favorite seed catalog.
  1. Bells of Ireland

    • Perhaps the best known and widest available annual with green flowers is bells of Ireland or Molucella laevis, so named for its bell-shaped bloom in the color of the Emerald Isle.

It is an heirloom seed, grown during earlier history, with flowers attractive for both fresh and dried arrangements. Reaching a height of about 30 inches, it grows best in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil and prefers cool weather. Bells of Ireland is suggested for background planting or in rows as a cut flower.

    Tequila Lime Zinnias

    • Tequila lime zinnias are a Burpee Co. exclusive. They have 2-inch blooms in a citrus-lime shade of green. Growing up to 3 inches in diameter and to a height of 30 inches, these flowers are perfect for cutting or in background planting.

    Jade Hybrid Sunflower

    • Green is a most unusual color for a sunflower. The jade hybrid sunflower

has cool lime-green blossoms with a jade green middle. It grows 4 to 5 feet tall in a sunny garden with branching 4-to-5-inch blooms.

    Nicotiana Lime Green

    • Lime green Nicotiana alata is a member of the flowering tobacco family. It has yellow-green trumpet-shaped flowers and grows to 2 or 3 feet tall in full sun. This annual is known to attract hummingbirds, and its fragrance fills the summer night.
