How to Sprout Vinca

Vinca comes in both annual and perennial varieties, but only the annual types are sprouted from seeds. The vines climb over supports or trail as a ground cover during the warm summer months, but they can't tolerate frost. Sprouting the seeds indoors 10 weeks before the last spring frost gives the young seedlings time to grow so they are ready to flower soon after transplanting outdoors in late spring or early summer.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a seedling tray with a fine-textured soilless potting medium. Water the medium until it's thoroughly moistened then allow it to drain the excess water for 30 minutes before sowing the seeds.

    • 2

Plant the vinca seeds on top of the medium. Set the seeds two inches apart in rows that are also set two inches apart. Press on the seeds gently so they are in full contact with the potting medium. Cover them with a 1/4-inch layer of medium.

    • 3

Cover the tray with a black plastic bag, which holds in moisture and blocks out light. Place the tray in a 77 degree Fahrenheit location to sprout, which takes up to two weeks.

    • 4

Remove the bag once the first vinca sprouts emerge. Move the tray to a 70 F location where the plants receive about eight hours of sunlight daily.
