Hoya Plants

Hoya, a member of the Asclepiadaceae family, refers to a genus of over 200 different plants. The tropical and subtropical plants are a native of Australia, the South Pacific Islands, China and Southeast Asia. Hoya plants are also commonly known as wax plants, wax vine or porcelain flowers. The plants have thick, leathery foliage and the waxy, fragrant blooms grow in round, upside-down, umbrella-like clusters. Hoya plants are low maintenance once mature. The plants are highly drought tolerant and can withstand a range of temperatures and humidity levels.
  1. Hoya Kerrii

    • Hoya kerrii is also referred to as sweetheart or valentine hoya. The plant is a native of Thailand and is distributed throughout the Indo-China region. Hoya kerrii has thick, succulent, heart-shaped leaves. The plant has a climbing growth habit and roots easily along the stems if provided ample moisture. It is considered one of the most vigorous climbing hoya varieties. The plant blooms in the summer once it becomes rootbound. Hoya kerrii thrives in shade and does not require much water. Wet soil can be highly damaging to hoyas and it is best to keep the soil on the dry side.

    Hoya Macgregorii

    • Hoya macgregorii is a native of the Philippines and is grown for its large, ball-like clusters of 120 or more flowers. This is the most number of flowers for any hoya variety. The flowers have a sharp, spicy fragrance. The plant grows as a vigorous vine that needs lots of space to spread and grow. The dark green, leathery foliage is 3 to 5 inches long and about 2 inches wide. Hoya macgregorii grows best in more tropical temperatures, preferring warmth and humidity. The plant thrives with ideal nighttime temperatures of about 63 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Hoya Pubicalyx

    • Hoya pubicalyx is a native of the Philippines. The plant has a vigorous growth habit and grows easily both as an indoor or outdoor potted plant. The mature plant produces an abundance of flower clusters at the same time and blooms repeatedly. Hoya pubicalyx is extremely cold hardy and tolerates colder temperatures better than many other hoya varieties. However, the plant cannot survive outdoor winter weather. It is best to move this plant indoors during winter where it will manage well, even in unheated areas.
