Complete Plant Food

A complete fertilizer or plant food includes the three macronutrients plants need for optimal growth and development. A complete plant food does not always include micronutrients and trace elements that plants may require.
  1. Nutrients

    • Nutrients needed by a particular plant may already exist in the soil, and the plant may be unable to use them, due to an incorrect soil pH. This emphasizes the need for a yearly soil test to determine which macronutrients and micronutrients should be added. The use of complete plant food may be detrimental to the crop.

    Macronutrients

    • Macronutrients nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium will all be included in a complete plant food. The NPK ratio displays the percentage of each in a series of three numbers on the container. For instance 10-10-10 has equal amounts of the three primary macronutrients. The remainder of the percentage is micronutrients and inert filler.

    Inert Filler

    • Filler is necessary in forms of complete and incomplete plant foods to ensure even distribution and avoid fertilizer dump.
