Nutrients needed by a particular plant may already exist in the soil, and the plant may be unable to use them, due to an incorrect soil pH. This emphasizes the need for a yearly soil test to determine which macronutrients and micronutrients should be added. The use of complete plant food may be detrimental to the crop.
Macronutrients nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium will all be included in a complete plant food. The NPK ratio displays the percentage of each in a series of three numbers on the container. For instance 10-10-10 has equal amounts of the three primary macronutrients. The remainder of the percentage is micronutrients and inert filler.
Filler is necessary in forms of complete and incomplete plant foods to ensure even distribution and avoid fertilizer dump.
