What Are the Varieties of Calla Lilies?

Calla lilies are late spring- to early summer-flowering perennial bulbs that are indigenous to the southern regions of Africa. The calla lily (Zantedeschia) belongs to the plant family Araceae; thus, the calla lily is a lily in name only and not a true lily, which belong to the Liliaceae plant family. Common names of the calla lily are trumpet lily, arum lily and pig lily. There are six species of calla lilies.
  1. Zantedeschia aethiopica

    • The calla lily Zantedeschia aethiopica has the common name of giant white arum lily. This species of calla lily is a rhizomatous, herbaceous, perennial plant. The plant acts like an evergreen in regions with plentiful rain and average temperatures; however, in areas with dry seasons, this calla lily performs like a deciduous plant. The foliage of the giant white arum lily is dark green with 16-inch-long arrow-shaped leaves. The plant develops a pure white blossom with a golden-colored 6- to 10-inch-long spathe.

    Zantedeschia albomaculata

    • The spotted arum lily (Zantedeschia albomaculata) reaches heights of 3 feet tall with 18-inch-long deep green, pointed leaves. This species of calla lily is a deciduous plant with translucent white spots on its foliage. The blossoms of the spotted arum lily have 4- to 5-inch-long spathe. The flower ranges in color from ivory to cream and pink to purple.

    Zantedeschia elliottiana

    • The golden arum lily (Zantedeschia elliottiana) is a 3-foot-tall calla lily. The foliage of the golden arum lily forms in an oval shape and is decorated with white spots. The leaves are 18 inches in length and a dark green color. The Zantedeschia elliottiana species of calla lily is a deciduous plant. The golden arum lily blooms with 4- to 6-inch-long spathe in a golden yellow hue.

    Zantedeschia jucunda

    • The Zantedeschia jucunda is a 2-foot-tall deciduous, perennial plant. The leaves of the Zantedeschia jucunda have a triangular form with oval-shaped blotches. The flower of the Zantedeschia jucunda has a 4-inch-long spathe. The blossom is a large, showy flower in a dark yellow hue with purplish spots.

    Zantedeschia pentlandii

    • The Zantedeschia pentlandii is a 2-foot-tall calla lily with deciduous foliage. The leaves are a yellowish-green shade. The blossom of the Zantedeschia pentlandii is a narrow, tubular flower with a lengthy 4-inch-long spathe. The flower forms in a lemon yellow hue with purple spatter marks.

    Zantedeschia rehmannii

    • The pink arum lily (Zantedeschia rehmannii) develops into a 3-foot-tall calla lily. The pink arum lily is a deciduous plant. The lance-shaped leaves are 18 inches long in a deep green hue with spots; the hybrids of the Zantedeschia rehmannii typically do not have spots. The bud of the pink arum lily has a thin, tubular appearance with a 4- to 5-inch-long spathe. The color of the flower is white, pink, red or deep purple.
