How to Plant Exotica Bulbs

Exotica is a type of amaryllis with apricot-colored flowers. It grows 22 to 24 inches tall and thrives in USDA hardiness zones 8 through 11. Exotica bulbs are available beginning in October and can be planted until January. In warm climates, the planting time is extended until April.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a planting location with well-draining soil that receives full sun or light shade.

    • 2

Loosen the soil in the area by digging into it with a gardening fork. Lift the soil, turn it, and crush any clumps that are larger than your fist.

    • 3

Work a 3-inch layer of compost and bulb fertilizer, at the rate suggested on the package, into the soil.

    • 4

Rake the bed smooth and level.

    • 5

Dig planting holes, and place the bulbs so that the neck -- the top 1-inch -- remains above the surface of the soil. When planting more than one Exotica, space them a minimum of 12 inches apart.

    • 6

Water the amaryllis bed until it is moist to 1 inch below the bottom of the bulb. Keep the soil moist until the bulb sprouts.
