Choose a planting location with well-draining soil that receives full sun or light shade.
Loosen the soil in the area by digging into it with a gardening fork. Lift the soil, turn it, and crush any clumps that are larger than your fist.
Work a 3-inch layer of compost and bulb fertilizer, at the rate suggested on the package, into the soil.
Rake the bed smooth and level.
Dig planting holes, and place the bulbs so that the neck -- the top 1-inch -- remains above the surface of the soil. When planting more than one Exotica, space them a minimum of 12 inches apart.
Water the amaryllis bed until it is moist to 1 inch below the bottom of the bulb. Keep the soil moist until the bulb sprouts.
