How to Grow Oncidium Twinkle Pink Profusion

A member of the oncidium family of orchids, Oncidium Twinkle ‘Pink Profusion’ is an oncidium crossbreed -- cheirophorum x oncidium ornithorhynchum. Grown from a pseudobulb, this showy plant produces 10-inch, grass-like spikes that thrive within a medium light source. Because of its small stature, a 4-inch pot suits this particular oncidium quite nicely. Grow it well, and this showstopper will repeatedly produce sprays of tiny pink blooms that exude a pleasant vanilla aroma.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a 4-inch pot halfway with orchid bark mix. Insert the oncidium bulb into the mix, tip facing up.

    • 2

Add more mix to the pot, covering the bulb and filling the pot 1 inch from the top lip. Add enough water to the pot to dampen, not saturate, the orchid mix.

    • 3

Set the pot in a window where it will receive bright to medium, filtered light. A constant temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 60 degrees Fahrenheit at night suits the oncidium species just fine.

    • 4

Maintain moist soil, appropriate light and a humidity level no lower than 40 percent in the growing space. Foliage should emerge within several weeks after planting the pseudobulb.

    • 5

Allow the top layer of soil to dry-out in between waterings once the ‘Pink Profusion’ emerges. Offer the oncidium a 30-10-10 fertilizer once a month according to manufacturer’s instructions. Some brands of fertilizer suggest twice a month feedings.

    • 6

Repot the Oncidium Twinkle once every two years. Empty the pot of orchid bark mix, brush-off the pseudobulb and refill the pot with fresh medium. Replant the oncidium, patting the soil around it. Refreshing the soil every two years ensures that the plant has proper nutrients.
