How to Determine the pH of Salt

The pH of a material is the level of its acidity. Those that have a pH level higher than 7.9 are considered alkaline, while those below 5.9 are considered acidic. A reading of 7.0 is considered a neutral pH level. With the wide availability of home pH kits, testing materials is a simple task. If you want to determine the pH level of salt, you can do so easily in under 10 minutes with a testing kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Carefully read the instructions accompanying your pH test kit as the testing process can vary by kit type.

    • 2

Scoop up a sample of the salt with a spoon and deposit it into the test kit. It is important that you do not touch the salt with your hands because doing so can throw off the pH reading.

    • 3

Add the provided solution --- or water if it is instructed in the directions --- to the kit.

    • 4

Add drops of the colorant to the solution as directed in the test kit's instructions.

    • 5

Wait the directed time for the solution to settle. Then compare the color of the solution with the provided color chart. Match the colors as closely as possible for the best pH reading.
