Does an Above Ground Pool Cleaner Work for an Inground Pool?

Whether you have an above-ground pool or an in-ground pool, you should clean your swimming pool at least once a week. Cleaning the pool removes impurities from the water and cleans debris floating on the surface, leaving behind clean water for swimming. It is possible to use an above-ground pool cleaner for an in-ground pool because the two are fairly similar.
  1. Cleaning Range

    • Both above-ground and in-ground pool cleaners have a cleaning range. The cleaning range includes how deep the cleaner goes and how far it moves around the swimming pool. For example, a cleaner might have a range of 10 feet. It only moves 10 feet in any direction. If the cleaner hits a wall before reaching the end of its range, it bounces back and starts moving in the opposite direction.

    Pool Depth

    • Always check the cleaning range before investing in any type of cleaner. Above-ground pool cleaners work at a depth of up to 8 feet. That means the cleaner can go down to a depth of 8 feet for cleaning the bottom of the pool. The problem arises when you have an in-ground pool with a larger depth. For example, if you have a pool with a depth of 10 feet, a normal above-ground pool cleaner may not work. The cleaner cannot reach the bottom of the pool, which might leave behind mildew or debris on the bottom.

    Considerations

    • One reason you might invest in an above ground pool cleaner is because the devices are often cheaper than those designed for in ground pools. The cleaners work as well as the in ground versions. Before using one in your own swimming pool, check the pump system and water filtration system. The filter and pump system help clean the water and work with the pool cleaner to remove impurities and debris.

    Pool Cleaner Types

    • Pressure-side pool cleaners attaches to the filter of the pool, which provides the pressure that moves the cleaner. A suction-side pool cleaner also attaches to the filter, but works like a vacuum. The cleaner moves across the pool, removing the debris. The danger of a pressure-side or suction-side cleaner is that neither work effectively at handling larger types of debris, including smaller tree branches. Robotic cleaners work separate from the filter or pump. The cleaners work on both smaller and larger debris, but are more expensive than the other types.
