Bonding Requirements for Inground Pools in New Jersey

New Jersey has several strict building regulations in force covering the construction of inground pools within its jurisdiction. These requirements are developed with safe and secure pool use in mind and it is an offense to violate the regulations. The bonding requirements for inground pools in New Jersey cover the bonding of the perimeter surfaces, any metal items attached to the pool and any lighting you may choose to install for use with or in the pool itself.
  1. Perimeter Surface Bonding

    • All pools, including inground pools, in the state of New Jersey are required to have equipotential bonding grids beneath all the paved surfaces surrounding the pool. This requirement extends up to 3 feet from the edge of the pool and includes any concrete walkways, paving slabs or other surfacing materials.

    Metals

    • Any metal pieces attached to the pool must be bonded together using #8 solid wire bonding. This includes any handrails, any fencing within 5 feet of the pool edge, any ladders, any pool motors and any diving boards attached to the pool.

    Lighting

    • Any lighting attached to or used with the pool must be both encapsulated and bonded using #8 stranded wire to ensure pool safety. This includes overhead lighting, underwater lighting and any lighting in or on the sides of the pool.

    Inspection

    • The state of New Jersey requires a number of inspections be carried out during the construction of an inground pool, the fourth of which is an electrical inspection. During this inspection, the bonding and trench on the pool will be assessed for compliance with state regulations. If such an inspection is not carried out, a violation may be issued to you.
