How to Clean a Honda 8th Generation Air Conditioner

The air that circulates through your late-model Honda Civic's cabin via the climate control system would carry a lot of dust, pollen and other bits of matter if it weren't for your air conditioner's filter. Over time, the filter will become clogged with enough matter to need cleaning or replacing. Try to clean your eighth-generation Honda Civic's air filter before replacing it. Eighth-generation Honda Civics are the 2006 to 2011 models.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the glove compartment. Grab both sides of the glove box and pull them gently but firmly inward until the rubber stops that secure them to the compartment frame come out. Remove the glove box.

    • 2

Push on the two tabs on the side of the air filter tray in order to separate the tray from the blower motor housing, which sits directly behind the glove compartment. Slide the tray straight out of the glove compartment.

    • 3

Grasp the air filter and pull it straight up and out of the tray. Take note of the air flow markings on the filter to ensure you replace it in the proper direction.

    • 4

Knock the air filter on a solid surface in order to knock the larger clumps of dirt and dust off it. Gently use an old toothbrush or cleaning rag to remove whatever other dirt you can without tearing the filter.

    • 5

Examine the air filter. If dirt and grime still clog portions of the filter, it needs replacing rather than cleaning. If your existing filter is relatively clean, though, put it back into the tray with the air flow markings facing the same direction that they were when you removed the filter.

    • 6

Slide the tray back into the slot on the blower motor housing until you hear the side tabs click. Shake the tray gently to ensure that it is firmly attached.

    • 7

Push the sides of the glove box gently but firmly inward and align the rubber stops with their holes in the sides of the glove compartment. Release the pressure on the sides and let the stops slide into place. Close the glove box.
