How to Make Paving Blocks Smaller

Cement pavers are formed concrete used in the construction of outdoor areas, such as patios and walkways. The pavers come in a variety of sizes and shapes and can be customized to fit any application or design. Most pavers are basic squares or rectangles that fit best in a design utilizing 90-degree angles. However, an angle-grinder can cut pavers to a specific size or shape to fit any pattern. Hardware stores offer rentals of tools, such as a wet saws and cement saws, that also can make such cuts. Cutting the pavers to the proper size or shape is a simple matter.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the paver into place on the outdoor structure, such as the patio or walkway.

    • 2

Mark the paver with the cuts necessary for a proper fit, using a pencil. The marks should extend along each side, top and bottom.

    • 3

Cut the paver, using a 9-inch angle grinder and a diamond cutting disc, along the marks made in Step 2. Thick pavers will not allow the cut to penetrate all the way through. Cut as deep as possible around the entire paver.

    • 4

Press a stone chisel into the groove made by the cut with the flat end facing the portion of the paver that you want to save. Hammer the chisel into the groove starting near an edge and working toward the opposite edge. The paver will fracture along the cut line.

    • 5

Clean up any rough points or protrusions with the hammer and chisel or the angle-grinder.
