Slowly pour boiling water on any visible ant hills. While you may need to do this more than once, it should eventually kill the colony.
Make a mixture of borax with sand for use in the pavement joints. Sand is often used as the base when laying pavement slabs. Ants use it to build their colonies.
Sprinkle a mixture of borax and sand in the pavement cracks and joints. Sweep the mixture into the joints with a stiff broom in a back and forth motion to ensure the mixture gets down into the pavement cracks.
Use the pennyroyal herb to make a tea for repelling ants. Allow the tea to cool and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray affected areas with the tea. Spearmint, southernwood and tansy may also be used.
Make a mixture of 1 part borax and 1 part sugar to place around affected areas. Ants love sugar and will take the mixture containing borax back to their nests. The borax will poison the queen.
