Can I Lay Paver Stones Over the Top of My Walkway?

Laying paver stones over a walkway adds style and visual interest. You can resurface a concrete walkway with pavers as long as the concrete is in good condition and any minor cracks and pits are patched. Installing stones over the top will raise the surface of the walkway about 3 inches. The process isn't complicated, but it requires precision to ensure that the paver stones form a flat, level surface.
  1. Preparation

    • When you pave over an old walkway, the quality of the existing surface will determine the longevity of the new surface. Clean the walkway thoroughly with a hose and scrub brush to remove debris embedded in the concrete. Look for cracks and pits in the concrete and fill them with vinyl patching compound to stop them from spreading.

    Design

    • Laying pavers will transform the look of an old concrete walkway. Consider all of your design options, and choose a pattern that complements the character of your landscape. For example, interlocking stone pavers offer an intricate pattern and lock each other in place. Stone pavers are also available in different rectangular dimensions that can be pieced together like a geometric puzzle. Dry-lay the stones on the walkway surface to see how different patterns will look.

    Installation

    • If you're comfortable working with mortar, consider setting the pavers in a 1/2-inch layer of mortar. The advantage of using mortar is that it holds the pavers in position permanently, but it can be messy to use and you must work quickly. One alternative to mortar is to set the stones in a thin bed of course sand. The sharp edges of grit sand create friction against the bottom of the stones and keep them from sliding around. If you set the stones in sand, though, you must install edge restraints to hold the pavers in place.

    Maintenance

    • Installing paver stones over a walkway not only changes the appearance, but adds years of service when properly maintained. Sweep fine sand or stone dust between the stones once they're in place, to block debris. Coat the entire walkway with stone sealant to preserve the natural colors and make it easier to wash the surface.
