Measure the width of the cobblestones with a tape measure and lay down ropes to outline the course of the edging. Add 1 inch to the distance between the concrete edge and the rope for backfill.
Remove the growth between the rope and the concrete using a spade. The depth should be 4 inches plus half the thickness of the cobblestones.
Pound the end of a 4-by-4-inch board against dirt at the bottom of trench to stabilize it.
Add a 3-inch thick layer of gravel over the trench and tamp it with the board. Gravel will prevent the cobblestones from sinking while allowing underground water to drain away.
Pour course sand over the rocks. Drag a board down the length of the trench to smooth out the sand. The sharp edges create traction against the bottom of the stones to help keep them in place.
Drop the cobblestones along the outer edge of the trench. Butt the edges against each other and continue to place the stones side-by-side or end-to-end. Lay a board over each completed side and walk on it to press the stones down evenly.
Pack gravel into the space between the cobblestones and the concrete so water can easily drain off of the surface.
Brush fine sand between each cobblestone with a stiff hand brush. Sprinkle water over the stones to weigh the sand joints down. As it dries, the sand will cling to the cobblestones like concrete.
