How to Make a Flagstone Mold Textured

Flagstone walkways, paths and patios give a casual elegance to your outdoor landscaping. Finding or purchasing enough natural stone to pave large areas can be expensive. Molding your own pavers saves money and gives you custom sized pavers for your project. Reusing the same molds gives you uniform sized pavers. However, since nature is rarely uniform, the process doesn't look natural. In addition, molded pavers are smoother than natural rocks. Adding texture to your pavers makes them look more natural.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a hole in the loose garden soil. The hole must be wider at the top than at the bottom. For a strong paver, the hole should be 3 to 4 inches deep. The stone can be as wide as you wish.

    • 2

Press the plastic into the hole. For this project, you can purchase heavy-duty garbage bags and cut the sides to open the plastic. The plastic will gather around the sides and edges of the hole. This gives your stone more texture and interest. For additional texture, sprinkle the bottom of your hole with dry sand. To give your stone a "crack," lay a single string in the bottom of the hole. Cut the string long enough so that it goes up the side of the hole.

    • 3

Mix the concrete in the bucket, following the manufacturer's instructions. Choose the smoothest concrete available.

    • 4

Pour a small amount of concrete into the plastic lined hole. Replace the string if it moves. Fill the rest of the hole with concrete.

    • 5

Cover the concrete with plastic and let the paver cure overnight.

    • 6

Dig around the paver in the loose dirt until you can reach under the stone. Lift the stone and turn it over. Peel the plastic away from the paver. Pull the string out of the concrete.

    • 7

Brush the top of the paver with the steel brush lightly to soften the "crack" and give your paver more interest.

    • 8

Cover the paver with plastic and let the concrete cure for seven days before installing or walking on it.
