Do-it-Yourself Backyard Landscaping

Landscaping a backyard begins with a plan that includes the elements that you can't or don't want to change. This includes paths, porches and decks, along with plantings that you want to keep. When you're drawing up your plan, maintain the scale so that any purchases you make will be the right size, and your finished landscape will look the way you envisioned it. Keep in mind how large any plants will grow, and make accommodations for their mature size.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the backyard, using a tape measure, and place the information on a piece of paper. Take into consideration the angle of the sun at different times of day and year, wind direction and pleasant and unpleasant views.

    • 2

Draw out the backyard to scale, using either graph paper or a computer program. Include permanent features, such as fences, porch or deck, outbuildings, paths and existing trees, shrubs and flowerbeds.

    • 3

Envision what you want to do with your backyard. Do you want more space where you can grill, a grassy area where your children can play, an additional flowerbed? Prioritize what you want to do.

    • 4

Play with your plan. If a bigger grassy area for your children is your priority, add it to your plan. Include play sets and their location, and stick to scale. If you have additional room, add your second priority, such as a bigger grilling area. As you add elements to the yard, consider complementary features, such as a small fountain in a flowerbed. If you're adding a fire pit, it will need to go on a fireproof surface.

If your yard lacks trees, plan for some form of shade, either man-made or natural.

Take the plan to a home-improvement center or nursery, and purchase your supplies. Begin implementing the plan, first with projects that require construction. Put in your plantings last.
