How to Install a Concrete Stepping Stone Pathway

Stepping stones can guide traffic around your home or garden, and avoid wear on your lawn. Luckily, installing a concrete stepping stone pathway isn't difficult and will enhance the look of your property. While the shape, color and size of your stones is important, decide if you want the stones to run in line, be staggered and random, or be set in pairs before you begin.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your stepping stones out on the grass to form the pathway pattern you want. Keep 6 to 12 inches of space between the stones to allow for grass to grow, but keep the stones close enough for comfortable walking. Leave the stones in place for one week to yellow the grass underneath.

    • 2

Move the stones to the side to expose the yellowed grass. Dig down in the discolored area 6 inches deep. Pour 2 inches of gravel into each hole.

    • 3

Measure the stepping stones' length and width. Add 4 inches to both measurements. Cut one piece of landscaping fabric to this size for each stepping stone. Center each piece of fabric over a hole and press the fabric downward to cover the gravel layer and run up the sides.

Pour sand over the fabric 2 inches deep if your stones have a 2-inch height and 3 inches deep if your stones are only 1-inch thick. Smooth the sand flat by hand or with a shovel.

    • 5

Drop each stepping stone into a hole over the sand with the landscaping fabric running up the sides. Adjust the stones as needed so they fit snuggly over the sand. Stand on each stone to press them downward.
