Landscaping a Breezeway

Breezeways are one area of a home that simply cannot go without landscaping. Whether your breezeway takes you from garage to house or office building to office building, it only makes sense to make the walk a pleasant one with landscaping. Follow basic techniques to dress up a breezeway.

Instructions

Incorporate climbing plants into the decor if your breezeway has a natural trellis appeal. For cooler climates, you can use English Ivy or annually plant sweet peas. For warmer climates, use Japanese honeysuckle or snail plants for stunning flowers and foliage.

Think of the breezeway as a picture frame as you design portions of the yard surrounding the structure. Start with a grass base that is suited for your USDA Plant Hardiness zone and enhance with island-style landscaping. Island landscaping incorporates plants of various sizes, placing the shortest on the outskirts and the tallest in the center. You can surround the island with bricks or pavers to keep the grass out.

Add some romance and evening ambiance to a breezeway with strings of lights. Use Japanese lanterns if the breezeway is partially enclosed. For an open breezeway, any kind of outdoor Christmas lights will work.

Distinguish the breezeway path with beds on both sides. Beds should contain ground cover as well as taller plants. For springtime, use bulb plants such as daffodils and tulips. If you prefer long-term plants, consider box hedges, which can be formed into topiaries.
