How To Trim Tree Fronds

Fronds normally fall off of a palm tree naturally, but some do require pruning from time to time. Be careful when pruning a palm tree because doing so can make the tree more susceptible to disease, reduce their overall health, make them less hardy in the cold and make them unable to handle a windstorm. It is important to not remove more leaves or fronds from a palm tree than the tree will grow in one year.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a ladder to reach fronds that are out of reach from the ground. Have someone hold the ladder steady for you.

    • 2

Wear gloves when trimming fronds as they often have sharp edges and can hurt your hands.

    • 3

Trim a yellow or brown frond 1/4 inch away from the trunk of the tree.

    • 4

Cut off any frond that is bent or breaking away from the trunk as close to the tree trunk as possible.

    • 5

Remove any forming fruit stalks or flowers by clipping them off with hand pruners. These take strength away from the tree and can provide fodder for peests and rodents.
