Types of Shrubs

Shrubs can be used for landscaping or for adding color to a yard. You can plant shrubs in limited spaces or fill in areas to cover up unwanted areas. Shrubs can be a few inches high or 10 feet high. There are shrubs for shaded areas and shrubs that do well in sunlit areas. Most shrubs are hardy plants that grow stronger every year.
  1. Landscaping Shrubs

    • Landscaping shrubs make a popular setting for any yard. You will find many different shrubs in this category, including Sweetshrub, Winter Honeysuckle, Variegated Yucca, and the Black or Red Chokeberry. There are many other shrubs that will flourish in shade, sun, or partial sun.

    Hydrangea Shrubs

    • The hydrangea shrub is the name of some evergreen and deciduous shrubs. These types of shrubs are found in the United States and Asia. You can plant the Nikko Blue, Grandiflora, and the Oakleaf hydrangea. This type of shrub produces colorful flowers in clusters.

    Flowering Shrubs

    • The flowering shrub produces flowers when the season is right. They include the White Butterfly, Greywig dogwood, Silky dogwood, Common White lilac, and the Diana Rose of Sharon. Most flowering shrubs will bloom in the spring and summer, while in the fall months the shrubs have bright green leaves.

    Evergreen Shrubs

    • The evergreen shrubs have foliage during every season. The shrubs can keep their leaves from one to 18 years. There are smaller evergreen shrubs, and some shrubs reach heights of six feet or more. One particular evergreen shrub is the mountain laurel, which is a beautiful green shrub that does flower in season.

    Butterfly Shrubs

    • The butterfly shrubs are grown in subtropical and tropical conditions. These bushes have been used as a poison and for medicinal purposes, but are mainly used for landscaping because of the beautiful flowers they produce. The White Butterfly and the Claret Purple Butterfly shrubs are the most popular.

    Specialty Shrubs

    • The Spiraea and Weigela shrubs are less common, but are a good source of color and covering. The pink, red, and variegated Weigela have bell-shaped flowers and the Spiraea has colorful foliage. Specialty shrubs include the Snowmound, Little Princess, and Goldflame Spiraea.
