Can Blue Point Juniper Be Planted Near a House?

Blue Point is a cultivar of Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis) often grown to create a hedge or screen in a landscape. With an upright shape, it can be grown near a house, although ample space is needed for the shrub to grow to its fullest potential.
  1. Size

    • Adding 6 to 10 inches of new branch tip growth annually, Blue Point juniper matures at 10 to 14 feet tall with a width of 5 to 8 feet. It's widest at the plant base and tapers to a wide, loose point at the top.

    Spacing Considerations

    • To prevent branches and roots from quickly running into a house facade or foundation, plant this juniper no closer than 5 feet to the house. This is measured from the shrub trunk to the foundation footer. If there is an overlying eave or soffit, increase this spacing so the shrub will not grow into the eave as it gains height.

    Warning

    • Chinese junipers perform best in full-sun exposures in a fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Don't plant Blue Point in a fully shaded bed, nor in a zone where rainwater from the roof downpours and leaves a soggy, wet soil. Wet soil encourages rot and other fungal diseases.
