1. Make sure the hedge trimmer is properly fueled. The HS 45 uses a mixture of gas and oil, with a ratio of 50:1. Make sure to use fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 89 or higher. Add the appropriate amount of Stihl 2-cycle oil to the gas and mix thoroughly.
2. Locate the choke lever. The choke lever is located on the back of the hedge trimmer, near the engine. When the choke lever is engaged, it partially blocks the air intake, which results in a richer fuel mixture being delivered to the engine. This is necessary when starting a cold engine.
3. Set the choke lever to the "ON" position. This will engage the choke and allow the engine to start with a richer fuel mixture.
4. Find the starter pull handle. The starter pull handle is located on the front of the hedge trimmer, under the handle grips.
5. Pull the starter pull handle firmly towards you until the engine starts. As the engine starts, slowly release the choke lever so that the engine speed will not die off. If the hedge trimmer doesn't start the first time, don't worry. Engage the choke and try again.
6. Trim your hedges! Once you have set the hedge trimmer you want and the engine is running smoothly, you're ready to begin trimming your hedges.
Be sure to read and understand the hedge trimmer owner's manual before operating the machine.
Additional Tips:
1. Wear gloves and eye protection.
2. Keep the extension cord away from the blade.
3. Avoid cutting wet hedges.
4. Allow the hedge trimmer to cool down after use.
