Hearty Outdoor Hanging Plants

Outdoor hanging plants can add a splash of color to a gray urban balcony or provide a decorative touch to a country patio. Regardless of where you live, if you're considering purchasing a hanging plant, finding ones that are hardy and survive a variety of weather elements is important. There are a number of plants fit for use in a hanging planter that hold up well in most climates.
  1. Bellflower

    • Campanula muralis, otherwise known as a bellflower is one of 300 species of campanula. These work well in hanging planters and are hardy in most growing zones. Plants consist of a bell or star-shaped flower that comes in shades of blue, purple, white or pink. The stems are green and contain two to three of the blossoms. The plant grows best in soil with a pH level between 4.5 and 7.5.

    Spider Plant

    • Spider plants are one of the hardiest variety of hanging plants you can get. The plant is often displayed in the house, but can also survive outside as long as the temperature doesn't drop below freezing. This plant originated in South Africa and requires little maintenance when compared with other plants. Spider plants can live in bright sunlight or in the shade and tolerate both humid and dry air. Its long leaves drape over the side of planters and grow to a length of 8 to 16 inches. Small white flowers form on outward stalks and produce seed capsules.

    Blue Periwinkle

    • Vinca minor, otherwise known as the blue periwinkle is a hardy plant for hanging baskets according to Plants Plus, a nursery and gardening center. While this tiny plant is often found as ground cover, its fine texture and high density fill a hanging basket where small, five-petal flowers are produced. The plant thrives best in partial sun to full shade and soil that is rich and moist. Avoid placing the hanging basket in full sun, as it's not tolerated well by the plant.
