How to Build a Brick Patio Fire Pit

Measure the radius of the desired size for the interior circle of the fire pit on a length of string or line.

Attach or hold chalk to the end of the line. Use a nail to hold the center of the string at the center of the pit and swing the chalk around to make a circular guideline.

Space the bricks around the circle. They should be touching, leaving no gaps at the inside while fanning out on the outside. Ensure the spaces between bricks are even by inserting mortar dams (evenly sized blocks of wood) between all of the bricks.

Wrap a line or string around the first tier tightly enough to hold the wooden spacers in place.

Soak the bricks so they do not absorb moisture from the mortar.

Prepare the mortar mix according to manufacturer directions.

Put mortar between the bricks and tamp it firmly. Use a brick on the outside to keep the mortar in place. Leave a few of the joints between bricks open for drainage and ventilation purposes.

Let the mortar set for a few hours, then remove the cord or string from around the bricks.

Wash mortar stains from the top of the first tier.

Start the second tier. Place bricks over the mortar joints and continue this alternating for as many tiers as desired. Complete the second and any subsequent tiers using the same methods as for the first tier.
