Bark Mulch & Termites

Termites live in the soil and "forage for food as far as 250 feet from their colony," notes the University of Florida IFAS Extension. Termites move between food and soil under the protection of mud tubes.
  1. Significance

    • Subterranean termites feed on materials containing cellulose. In studies conducted by the University of Florida IFAS Extension, termites fed on mulch.

    Warning

    • Termites can use mulch as a bridge to cross soil treated by termiticides used to deter the pests, warns the Clemson Cooperative Extension. The extension service recommends keeping mulch 6 to 12 inches from the walls and foundations of buildings.

    Considerations

    • Nugget-style pine bark mulch and wood chip mulches may attract termites, according to the Clemson Cooperative Extension. The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture suggests the moisture content of mulch, rather than the material itself, is what attracts termites.
