Shade Cloth Ideas

Shade cloths can be used to shade plants, pets and humans occupying exterior spaces from overexposure to the sun, along with blocking buildings from excessive heat gain. The latter can help foster lower cooling costs and longer life of wood flooring and furniture that may be damaged by direct sunlight.
  1. Garden Cover

    • You can design a garden cover to create a greenhouse type of space for your plants. To save time and resources, try attaching a shade cloth to existing vertical structures such as the house and an adjacent fence. This will keep your plants that like shade in a cool area away from the sun's direct rays.

    Patio or Pergola Cover

    • You can use shade cloths to expand your outdoor living area in a cost-effective manner. If you build a pergola, you can simply fasten a shade cloth on top of the pergola to provide maximum protection from the sun without building a full patio roof. You can select from a variety of opacity depending on how much of the sun's light you want to shine through.

    Pool Enclosure

    • You can create a wall structure using two different types of shade cloths to enable different shading effects. One example of this could be an outdoor pool enclosure that has a heavier cloth (90% UV block) that is stretched inside a stick frame. The shade cloth can start from the floor level and extend up four or five feet (to create privacy), followed by a more translucent shade cloth that extends to the top of the frame (to allow light to enter).
