How to Prevent Grass From Growing Around Tree Flower Beds

Many gardeners prefer to eliminate grass from growing directly around trees for several reasons. No grass means easier mowing and trimming around trees, as well as eliminating the incidence of trunk injury from trimmers and mowers. If you decide to plant shade-loving flowers beneath a tree, prevent grass from growing around the tree in your flower bed by covering the soil to prevent growth. With basic mulching, your flower bed can remain grass-free.

Instructions

    • 1

Install landscape fabric over the soil around the flowering plants growing in the flower bed. Cut the landscape fabric to fit the flower bed, making holes in the fabric for the plants with scissors. Place the landscape fabric over the soil, arranging the holes around the plants.

    • 2

Place shredded mulch over the landscape fabric around the plants. To minimize damage and prevent disturbing the plants, use your hands to apply the mulch carefully around the plants. Sprinkle between 3 and 4 inches of shredded mulch over the landscape fabric, but keep the mulch at least 2 inches away from the trunk of the tree. Use shredded wood chips, shredded leaves, pine needles or bark for best results.

    • 3

Spread the mulch into an even layer by raking it gently with the hand rake. Move the mulch carefully with the hand rake so you do not disturb the plants.

    • 4

Add additional mulch over the planting area once or twice each growing season to keep it between 3 and 4 inches thick.
