Determine the size of your flower box. If you plan on growing a certain type of flower, research the needs of the plant to ensure that the box is large enough to accommodate the roots. Write down your desired height, width and depth in inches.
Calculate the amount of wood you will need to build your flower box. You will need four pieces total to form the sides of the box: two for the front and back, and two for the sides. For example, for a 4-foot square box, purchase four 2-foot-long pieces of wood.
Position the side of the front piece and the side of one of the side pieces so that they form a 90-degree angle. Use the drill to add three screws through the front piece to hold the side piece in place. Repeat for the other three sides.
Prime and paint your flower box if desired. Use latex paint instead of oil-based paint to avoid spreading potential toxins to your flowers. Always paint in a well-ventilated area, and let the paint dry completely before handling the flower box.
Place the box in the yard in the desired position. Unroll the weed paper, then cut a piece large enough to cover the bottom of the flower box. Staple the weed paper in place to prevent weeds from infesting your flowers. Then add topsoil and plant whatever flowers you desire.
