How to Build a Double Fence Gate

Materials:

For each half of the double gate:

- Four 2x4s, cut to 4 feet long

- Twenty-four 1-inch deck screws

- Two hinges

- Two gate latches

- One piece of hardware cloth, cut to 4 feet by 6 feet

Build the frames:

1. Assemble the frame for each gate. To do this, join two 2x4s together with 1-inch deck screws. Make sure the ends are flush with each other. Then, attach the other two 2x4s to the first two, making a rectangular frame.

2. Brace the frames. To do this, attach two pieces of 2x4 diagonally across each frame. Make sure the braces are at least 2 feet long.

3. Attach the hardware cloth. Place the hardware cloth over one side of each gate. Fold it over the edges and attach it to the frame with 1-inch deck screws.

4. Attach the hinges. Attach one hinge to each gate, at the top and bottom of the frame.

5. Attach the gate latches. Attach a gate latch to each gate, at the center of the frame.

6. Hang the gates. Hang the gates on the fence posts. Make sure they open and close smoothly.

7. That’s it! Your double fence gate is now complete.

Tips:

- Use pressure-treated wood for the frames and braces for extra durability.

- Make sure the gate latches are high enough so that children cannot reach them.

- If you live in an area with high winds, you may want to add additional support to the gates with extra braces or brackets.

- You can customize your gate by adding decorative trim, paint, or stain.

- Enjoy your new double gate!
