How to Cut the Arch on an Arched Fence

A gentle arch on the top of your fence pickets adds a visual quality to an otherwise fairly unspectacular element of your landscape. But it may puzzle some as to how you achieve the linear arch over so many pieces of lumber. The trick to it is quite obvious once you know, and it is easy to achieve even for someone not that well-versed in woodworking.

Things You'll Need

  • Plywood
  • Compass
  • Jigsaw
  • Fence pickets
  • Masking tape

Instructions

    • 1

Scribe the desired shape of your arch onto a piece of scrap plywood using a compass. The plywood should be as wide as the section of fence pickets when the pickets are side by side.

    • 2

Cut out the arch on the plywood using a jigsaw.

    • 3

Line up all the fence pickets for one fence section (between fence posts) with the bottom of the pickets exactly flush. Use masking tape to bind them together.

    • 4

Place the plywood on top of the bound fence pickets, with the top of the plywood arch flush with the top of the middle picket.

    • 5

Cut the fence picket tops along the arch shape using a jigsaw. Repeat with as many sections of fence pickets that are needed to complete the fence.
