How to Cool a Front Porch

A front porch provides a comforting sanctuary from which to view the goings on in the neighborhood or to watch nature unfold. During the summer months a porch may become too hot to enjoy unless you find ways to lower the temperature. Shielding the sun's bright rays and incorporating air circulation inside the space cools the porch for a more pleasurable outdoor experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Install an awning or place umbrella tables on uncovered front porches to provide shade during sunny days. A retractable awning allows you to fold up the device when it rains or at night.

    • 2

Hang porch blinds on the south and west sides of a covered porch to keep the sun's rays from heating the space. Roll the blinds up at night and allow them to hang down during sunny days to provide shade when sitting outside.

    • 3

Trim overgrown hedges and bushes to allow breezes to infiltrate and cool the porch area. Place a fan in a front window, set it on the porch floor or install it into the porch ceiling to create air flow.

    • 4

String outdoor lights around the perimeter of the porch to provide soft light in the evenings. High-wattage bulbs give off more heat than small bulbs.

    • 5

Add a small water feature to the front porch. A tabletop or floor fountain with the sound of trickling water provides thoughts of cool, running creeks while relaxing the mind and body.
