Mattress Odor Removal

Mattresses develop odors for a variety of reasons, such as mildew, chemicals and urine. When you notice an odor on your mattress, you need to remove the smell as soon as possible. Allowing the odor to remain may cause it to be absorbed deeper into the mattress. Clean your mattress with safe items you have around your house to save money and protect yourself from harsh chemicals.

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen liquid stains, such as urine and soda spills, with a wet washcloth. Blot the area instead of pressing or rubbing to avoid spreading the stain and odor. Rub borax over the dampened area, and allow it to dry completely. Once the borax dries, vacuum it from the mattress.

    • 2

Vacuum all sides of the mattress to remove dirt, dust and debris. An accumulation of dead skin cells or dust may make the mattress smell. Attach an upholstery hose to the vacuum, and clean all parts of the mattress.

    • 3

Open all the bedroom windows, when the weather cooperates, so fresh air can enter and remove the odor.

    • 4

Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the mattress. Let the baking soda sit all day to absorb odors. Vacuum the baking soda from the mattress.

    • 5

Inspect the mattress for damp areas. Dampness in a mattress can cause mold or mildew, which results in an unpleasant smell. Dry the mattress by placing it outdoors in the sun or leaning it against a wall. Place a fan in the room to accelerate the drying.
