How to Get Colored Hairspray out of Fabric

Colored hairspray gives hair a funky flair, which is desirable to many people during Halloween, sporting events and parties. This temporary hairspray may inadvertently transfer onto clothing when sprayed onto hair, leaving fabric marred with vivid hues such as neon blue, hot pink and even glittery gold. Colored hairspray not only ruins clothing’s appearance, but also becomes harder to extract the longer it sets. Quickly remove colored hairspray from fabric to recover the garment’s original appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Blot up any fresh hairspray using white paper towels. Use a fresh section of the paper towel with each blot.

    • 2

Douse the remaining hairspray stain with pretreatment stain remover. Let the hairspray absorb the solution for one minute. No rinsing is necessary.

    • 3

Launder the garment according to its hang tag. Use the washing cycle and water temperature advised on the tag, along with 2 ounces of laundry detergent.

    • 4

Inspect the garment for remaining hairspray. If the hairspray color remains, rewash the garment as previously. However, substitute oxygen bleach for laundry detergent.

    • 5

Lay the hairspray-free garment flat to air-dry.
