How to Block Alpaca Knits

Alpaca is a soft, warm fiber that is ideal for knitting by hand or machine. Knitted items made from alpaca fiber drape well and have a soft sheen. To preserve these qualities, proper blocking is essential. Whether you are blocking a newly knit alpaca garment for the first time, or simply re-blocking an existing one, this process helps give the piece structure and improves the look and fit of the finished piece.

Things You'll Need

  • Tub or basin
  • Measuring cup
  • Wool soak
  • Large, clean dry bath towels, 2 per item to be blocked

Instructions

  1. Soak

    • 1

Fill the tub or basin with cool water.

    • 2

Add 1/4 cup wool soak to the tub. Swirl your hand through the water to blend.

    • 3

Place the alpaca knit item into the tub and push it under the water. The garment should be completely submerged.

    • 4

Allow the item to soak until it has reached a uniform color. Alpaca fiber gets darker when it is wet, so it will darken as the water is absorbed. When it is a uniform color again, it has absorbed as much water as it will hold.

    • 5

Set the timer for 30 minutes and allow the item to soak.

    Block

    • 6

Drain the tub. Gently squeeze as much water as you can from the alpaca by pressing it against the side of the tub. Do not wring, just use firm pressure to remove as much water as you can.

    • 7

Lay a clean towel on a table top or on the floor. Top with the wet alpaca knit. Spread the knit out, then roll it up in the towel. This will help absorb more water, and the piece can be rolled in any direction.

    • 8

Spread a towel out on the floor in a low traffic area, or on a guest room bed. Spread the alpaca item out on top of the towel with the right side facing up.

    • 9

Pat the alpaca knit gently into shape with your fingers, spreading it into the proper shape. Do not stretch the fiber, just pat it into shape.

    • 10

Let the alpaca garment stay in position until it has dried, then store or wear as desired.
