How to Get Rid of Stinky Sneakers

Your favorite sneakers will begin to stink if you wear them often and/or wear them without socks. The enclosed, warm environment is an ideal place for bacteria to thrive. One way to get rid of a smelly pair of sneakers is, obviously, to toss them out. But if you're not ready or willing to take that drastic step, you can do a few things to eliminate the odor, and address the issues that are causing the stench in the first place.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the dampness that encourages bacteria to thrive in your sneakers. Take out the insoles and set your shoes either in the sun or near a heat source to dry. Leave your laces untied to allow air to move through your shoes.

    • 2

Clean your shoes thoroughly. If your sneakers can be laundered, place them in the washer set on warm water and high spin. If they cannot be laundered, scrub the soles with a brush and wash the tops with soap and water. Dry your shoes thoroughly when you're finished cleaning them.

    • 3

Spray an anti-bacterial spray, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, inside your sneakers then let them dry for several hours before wearing them.
