How to Clean Microwave Slats

Turn your microwave around and you're likely to find greasy, stain-covered microwave vent slats. Because the vents aren't located on the front of the microwave, they're often overlooked during regular cleanings. As a result, dust, dirt and grease build up to leave a sticky residue on the microwave vent slats. Dirty vent slats affect the performance of your microwave. You can clean the microwave vent slats using common household supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your microwave. Vacuum off the back of the microwave and vent areas with an upholstery attachment. This helps remove any dust or debris in the openings of the vent slats.

    • 2

Dampen a clean cloth with water. Wring out the excess moisture.

    • 3

Wipe off the microwave vent slats to remove remaining built-up dust or pet hair stuck to the surface.

    • 4
Vinegar naturally cuts grease and deodorizes the microwave.

Moisten a clean cloth with undiluted white vinegar and wring out excess liquid. Wipe off the vent slats to break down and remove grease buildup.

    • 5

Wet an old toothbrush with white vinegar. Sprinkle baking soda onto the toothbrush bristles.

    • 6

Scrub stubborn stains around the vent slats to remove them with the safe abrasiveness of the baking soda.

    • 7

Rinse your microwave surface with a damp cloth. Dry it with another cloth. Allow the exterior to air-dry for 30 minutes before plugging it back in.
