Zinc lids that fit canning jars can be identified by their one-piece style and the placement of the sealing ring. In modern, two-part lids, the sealing ring fits tightly on the top of the jar's rim; with zinc lids, the ring contacts the shoulder of the jar. Zinc lids should not be used for home-preserving, as the technology and materials have been greatly improved for safer canning.
