How to Make Oilcloth Placemats

Oilcloth is a durable waterproof fabric available in a wide variety of colorful modern and retro patterns, making it an ideal place mat material for outdoor parties and picnics. Thanks to its nonabsorbent vinyl coating, you can wipe oilcloth clean with a wet sponge and dry it with a dish towel.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a 1-yard piece of oilcloth flat on the table with the wrong side up. Draw a 12-inch-by-18-inch rectangle onto the oilcloth with a ruler. (Alternatively, you can trace the outline of an existing place mat onto the oilcloth.) Repeat this step to create a second rectangle of the same size.

    • 2

Cut out both rectangles with fabric scissors.

    • 3

Place the oilcloth rectangles on your work surface with their wrong sides up. Spray both rectangles with adhesive spray, or paint the edges of one rectangle with fabric glue.

    • 4

Place the wrong side of one oilcloth rectangle evenly on top of the other, so that both printed sides face outward. Press the fabric down firmly, smoothing out any bubbles or ripples. Allow the adhesive to dry for at least a half hour, or follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

    • 5

Trim the edges of the place mat with pinking shears once the glue is dry.
