How to Look for Storage Space

Nearly one in 10 U.S. households rents storage space, according to the Self Storage Association. Perhaps you have recently moved into a smaller place or have excess inventory from a home business. Finding a suitable storage area for your extra items will give you more living space.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how much space you need. The smallest storage units are usually 5 feet by 5 feet. According to the Texas Self Storage Association, this would be sufficient for the contents of one small bedroom or office. A 5-foot-by-10-foot unit would hold the equivalent of a standard bedroom. Unit sizes go up from there.

    • 2

Decide which amenities are important to you in a storage unit. Consider whether the items you are storing require a climate-controlled environment with heating and air conditioning and whether you need 24-hour access to your belongings.

    • 3

Confirm with the store facility's owner whether the monthly rate is an on-going one or a move-in special that applies only to the first two months.

    • 4

Check the terms of the contract to find out if you will be charged a deposit and the terms for getting it back. Also find out how much notice is required if you need to move your belongings elsewhere.
