How to Recycle Phone Books in New Britain, Connecticut

New Britain, Connecticut, lies south of Hartford. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that the city had a population of 70,548 people in 2009. The city of New Britain provides recycling containers for residents who live in single-family homes or attached homes up to six units in size. The pickup occurs bi-weekly and the program, instituted in 2010, replaced separate bins with containers so residents do not need to sort recyclables. Phone book recycling provides material for roofing and insulation, paper towels and paper bags.

    • 1

Check your phone book for any inserts that are metal or plastic and remove them. Remove any adhesive labels that might be on the phone books since these can damage recycling equipment.

    • 2

Tear away any pages contaminated with food or grease. Paper that contains grease can ruin an entire load of recycled paper. The recycling process for paper involves using water. Since the water and oil don't mix, it reduces the quality of the end product, if the paper can be used at all.

Put the phone books into the recycling container after you have thoroughly inspected them. If you do not have a container where you live, ask a friend or co-worker if she can throw it in hers. You can also contact the Department of Public Works at 860-826-3350 for more information.
