DIY Organizer for a Pantry Shelf

Keep your pantry dry goods at your fingertips and easy to identify by storing them in glass jars. Mason jars work well for this project and more elaborate jars are available at home stores. Add a personal touch by either painting miniature chalkboards directly onto the jars or making your own chalkboard stickers. This way, write and wipe off the name of the product in the jars as needed.

Instructions

  1. Chalkboard Spray Paint

    • 1

Cut a 12-inch square of painter's tarp for each jar you want to paint a chalkboard on. Use a ruler and marker to draw the shape of the chalkboard on the center of each piece of tarp. Cut out the shape about 1/4 inch larger than your desired finished chalkboard.

    • 2

Lay a jar on its side and position the cutout in the tarp where you want the chalkboard. Use a level and a ruler to make sure the opening is straight. Use masking tape around the hole, overlapping the glass by 1/4 inch, so the space inside the hole in the tarp is now the size of your finished chalkboard. Wrap the tarp around the jar and tape in place. The tarp protects any other part of the jar, except for the chalkboard, from the paint.

    • 3

Spray the chalkboard openings with chalkboard spray paint according to the manufacturer's directions. Allow the paint to dry then remove the tape and tarp. Use a razor blade to remove any stray spots of paint.

    • 4

Prime the chalkboards by coloring all over them with chalk, then erasing. Now you can write the name of the product you fill the jar with.

    Chalkboard Stickers

    • 5

Draw your desired chalkboard shape on a piece of card stock. Cut out the shape. This is your template for cutting out chalkboard stickers.

    • 6

Lay a piece of chalkboard contact paper on a cutting mat with the paper side up. Trace around the template on the contact paper paper. Use a craft knife to cut out the shapes. These are your chalkboard stickers.

    • 7

Wipe glass storage jars with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol to remove any trace of oil that might keep the sticker from adhering. Allow to dry. Peel the paper from the first sticker and apply it to the front of the jar. Place the sticker carefully, so it is straight. Contact paper can be lifted and replaced if you make a mistake.

    • 8

Use a chalk ink pen to write the name of the product you put in the jar on the sticker. Chalk ink goes on like a marker, but wipes off like chalk when you're ready to rewrite the label.
