What Is a Sink Saddle?

Double sinks are a handy addition to your kitchen, allowing you to perform soaping and rinsing in one session. Whether your sink is ceramic or stainless steel, it's prone to scratching. That's where a sink saddle -- also called a saddle sink, sink protector or sink divider -- comes in handy. Rubbermaid recommends using this practical, protective accessory as part of your weekly sink-cleaning regimen.
  1. Description

    • Basic sink saddles are mats that drape over the center of the double sink. They are made from PVC or other soft plastics. Some have caddies incorporated for holding sponges or silverware. Perforations allow water to drain through. When buying ones with a caddy, look for one with a hole at the bottom so that water drains out and doesn't start to smell.

    Function

    • Sink saddles protect the sides of the sink from hard knocks, and they also protect the contents of your sink from breakage. If the saddle has mats that extend down to the bottom to collect dish-washing materials, this helps keep your sink clean. It's easier to lift out the mat and scrape leavings into the trash than it is to extract items from the drain.

    Styles

    • A basic sink saddle is little more than a mat, with or without the pockets that turn it into a caddy. If you prefer a minimalist look, choose a transparent model that showcases your gleaming sink. Another approach is to pick a decorative "designer" sink saddle; you can purchase them in floral patterns or bold colors, for example. Sink saddles with antimicrobial treatments help reduce odor.

    Availability

    • Sink saddles are readily available in home improvement stores, department stores and container or organization specialty stores. You can buy them online, but watch out for shipping charges.Sink saddles are inexpensive; prices in October 2011 started at around $4 for a basic mat.
