How to Organize a Den

Home dens are gathering places for families. This is where you might watch television, relax and play games -- some families even designate a corner in the den for office space. With all this activity, home dens can quickly become cluttered and unorganized. This creates an uninviting space. But rather than complain about an unorganized den and live with disarray, be proactive and clean up your den.

Instructions

    • 1

Create two separate piles in your den. Designate one pile for items that do not belong in the den. Make a pile for items that you will throw away or donate.

    • 2

Start in one section of your den. Go through each drawer, basket, corner or shelf and sort through papers and personal items. Determine a pile for each item. For example, you might place old magazines and newspapers in the "throw away" pile. Place old, unused items, such as picture frames, books and electronics in the "donate" pile. Once you complete a section, move to the next corner or area. Continue to choose a pile for items until the areas are clutter-free.

    • 3

Remove items from the den. Return items that do not belong in the den to their respective places. For example, you might return clothes, shoes and toys to the bedrooms, or store cups and plates in the kitchen. Put donated items in a large bag or box and place them in your car, if possible.

    • 4

Position books neatly on bookshelves. Buy file folders or a filing cabinet to keep personal documents, such as bank statements and bills, neatly organized and off your desk or tables.

    • 5

Purchase decorative baskets and place these on shelves and tables in your den. Store smaller items, such as remote controls, music CDs and DVDs, and video game controllers inside the baskets.

    • 6

Organize electronic cords behind the television, computer or stereo with cord ties.

    • 7

Hang additional shelving or purchase a storage ottoman to store blankets, small pillows and home accents.
